Brookfield (229) offers the argument that "self-direction can be interpreted as an inherently political idea, an oppositional, counter-hegemonic force." By focusing on the political dimensions of self-directed learning, gaining 'political clarity,' this idea could be made explicit. It might awaken the critical spirit in mainstream adult education ( and in children's education?)

According to the scientific approach to education (Decroly), reality should direct theories of education instead of the theories being allowed to mold our perceptions of reality (l7) "Educated" people are notoriously prone to confuse theory and reality (l8) Education must be experiential, not only theoretical. Walters proposes a "new and revolutionary system" which he calls "Education for Life."
