SYNTOPICON The Great Books of the Western World comprises fifty four volumes and contains 443 works dating from 500 B.C. to the mid-twentieth century. It was put together by Mortimer Adler and published by Encyclopedia Britannica Inc. in 1952. Robert Maynard Hutchins, the Editor in Chief, referred to the Great Books collection as the "The Great Conversation: The Substance of a Liberal Education". The ideas represented in the Great Books are made accessible in the two volume index which is entitled 'A Syntopicon of Great Books of the Western World.' The Syntopicon is a collection of the topics which Adler used to organize the wide diversity of ideas discussed in the Great Books.
